Cough, bronchitis or laryngitis are the three ailments that take turns throughout the winter period and even during other seasons. Simply contract a virus or our immune system weakens to pay the price of this evil trio. Viral infections, causing coughing and bronchitis take a long time to heal and most people often use antibiotics to treat them, which is a mistake. Also, natural remedies can be very effective in getting rid of these infections and without side effects.
The most important thing to know is that antibiotics should be used to fight diseases caused by bacteria. In case of viral infection, the antibiotics will be useless and will only increase the resistance to microorganisms.
Our grandmothers understood that natural remedies played an important role in the prevention and treatment of coughs, bronchitis and laryngitis. And to prepare them, they often used olive oil, honey and lemon juice and they were not wrong.
WHY IS THIS REMEDY EFFECTIVE?
The combination of these three ingredients is a powerful antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.
The consumption of olive oil is generally associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases and bad cholesterol. In addition, it is rich in antioxidants that can fight against free radicals, sources of serious diseases. Rich in vitamin K, it helps in the production of proteins and bone formation. But its benefits do not stop there, it is also considered as a basic cure for coughs. Thus, it helps reduce its symptoms by increasing lubrication and reducing inflammation of the throat in the same way as ibuprofen. Indeed, and according to NPR, researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, have discovered that the back of the throat is endowed with receptors that recognize the “oléocanthal” anti-inflammatory agent that is present in olive oil and which mimics the effect of ibuprofen.
Lemon is rich in vitamin C and has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and helps strengthen the immune system. Indeed, the limonoids contained in the lemon, would improve the immune system in animals, according to an in vivo study. In addition, lemon would even be beneficial for treating allergic rhinitis as demonstrated in this study.
Honey is known for its antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. Rich in vitamins B3, B9 and C, it is recommended to treat and calm the cough even in children. Indeed, the cough that it is due to an infection of the respiratory tracts or a cough devoid of infection is a common illness in the children as much as the cold. Moreover, a study has shown that honey is recommended before bedtime, to children over one year (below one year it causes botulism) and suffering from cough or infection of the pathways respiratory.
